After graduating in 1981 from the Polytechnic of Central London with a B.A. (Hons) in Film & Photography, I joined ATV Birmingham as a trainee studio cameraman. I worked on many great studio productions such as Tiswas, Crossroads, Spitting Image, Bulls-eye and various studio dramas & light entertainment shows. In 1985 I became a news cameraman, using the then new lightweight ENG cameras. I believe I was the youngest news cameraman in ITV, at that time. In 1988, I transferred to the film unit of Central TV (the old ATV) to shoot on location for national & regional productions. I worked alongside some great cameramen during my time at ATV & Central TV, and the knowledge I acquired prepared me for a freelance career as a Lighting Cameraman, which I began in February 1991.
My freelance career has been wide ranging, with productions such as Challenge Anneka in the 1990’s, to recent years when I have been shooting in Africa, India & South America for Comic Relief and currently Grand Designs. Experience counts for everything when a director needs an efficient, enthusiastic and responsible crew to think ahead and be prepared for the next sequence. That experience has been acquired by working on every type of production with every type of director. The television industry is a collaborative process and it’s about working with talented crews and organised production teams who can make the shoot a rewarding one.
Health & Safety issues are always a prime concern. I am qualified with a NEBOSH National Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety and am a Technician member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH). Clear guidance and information on all health and safety matters must be passed on to camera crews from production departments in good time to enable precautionary measures to be adopted. If you require a specific risk assessment made for your production I am certified to produce a production hazard assessment for location or studio filming.I have completed the HSE “First Aid at Work” certificate (valid to 27th January 2009).
